Next target = 汉语 (Chinese)

It was a two-day business trip. I was so discouraged and was deflated so much yesterday, which was lingering in this morning.

But it was of no use crying over spilt milk. I changed my mind to cheer myself up. I left my room for the restaurant of the hotel to take the breakfast. While waiting for the elevator, I noticed some members were approaching to the elevator from the other side. They were among the yesterday’s luncheon. Since I knew they were Chinese, I gathered all the courage available and spoke to them, saying “早上好! (Good morning!)”

It was almost for the first time for me to try my Chinese with native Chinese people when I met them in person. Although I had some chances so far, I had never used it, being afraid of making any possible mistakes.

Listening to my greeting, they looked up and froze for a while.
“I must have made another mistake…" I felt so with lots of tears in mind, but next moment I heard them saying “早上好”
I was veeeeeeeeeeeeeery happy and so much relieved, and tried another Chinese sentence that occurred to me. “你们吃了早饭吗? (Have you already had breakfast?)”
With gentle smile on face, they replied “没有。(Not yet).”

Since it was definitely impossible for me to continue in Chinese, we talked in Japanese after that. (They really had a strong command of Japanese!)
It was very kind of them to say “How did you learn Chinese?” “Four tunes are difficult to handle for Japanese people, but your pronunciation is very good.” And the conversation went on in Japanese and they taught me some Chinese expressions.

I became very happy again. It was not because of the social compliment I got. (I know my Chinese is still at kindergarten level though I tried so hard to get started learning Chinese last year.)
I was happy because I felt I was accepted by them. I like learning foreign language because, I think, learning their languages is the best way to show my respect to them. I was happy when the Chinese participants talked to me in Japanese. If they really had hated me, they would have never spoken to me in Japanese.

As I’m repeating on my blog, I think it is very great & wonderful that people with different backgrounds communicate with each other to understand and accept each other. Communicating with people you have never met is an indispensable step to enlarge your own world. Whenever I encounter such a situation, I’m really moved from the bottom of my mind. That’s what motivates me most in learning foreign languages.

It is also true in my study of USCPA. I came to know so many people with different backgrounds through the language named “CPA.”

Oh, that reminds me! I’ve gotta resume my study of USCPA again.

Yes, I’ll be fling over to Hawaii at the end of this month to sit for the CPA exams!
