Silence is no gold

Silence isn't gold especially when you can add value to the situation with your opinion. You'll regret if you don't put it out.

You have to think once, though, if you really should say that before you get your words released.

Silence is gold only when you withhold your tong after the consideration.

Just remain silent without having sense of contribution and without sense of responsibilities is just a lazy attitude.

Dream

I had a strange dream last night.
Dreams often make me realize what's possibily hidden in my mind. The one that I had last night was also such a dream.

News article

Ample information is innundating in this IT age and it is always asked what's the best way to conrol the information effectively.
(Efficiency isn't as difficult thanks to lots of technologies and convenient gears)

This morning I translated an article on Nikkei News paper to share it with my colleagues and I realized that I had not digested much information when I read it in Japanese first. Efforts taken for translation made me look deep into the article.
One way to process the Information might be reading the information twice with the second time being tried in another language.

Restart

It's been a while since I posred here last time.
Lots of things occured during my absence here, but l have been too busy to keep writing those here.

"Or I might have been just too lazy."

I came to think in this way recently.

The practice of looking back the day that I've just spent to find room for (even a slight) improvement can somehow be realized by keeping a blog in this way which I had been doing since I started this blog about 10 years ago.

I may not be able to make such a big challenge as sitting for USCPA exam, which was the reason I started this blog at that time.

But maybe I can find something meaningful.again by resuming this blog.

Let me give it a try, posting notes here more frequently than before.

Christmas

In stead of not having a series of new year's holidays, in Singapore, as many other countries, today was a national holiday.

Although our family didn't go out for anything special, we enjoyed our daughter finding a gift left by "Santa Claus."

a short break in the morning on Sunday

a0050593_11581338.jpg

Leaving my daughter at a lego brock playing center, I'm now having a small break at a nearby cafe, studying the script of a movie "a few good men " to practice English.
I don't think I can improve my English just by watching a movie unless I study the lines to carefully detect the unfamiliar words and phrases.

I haven't understood it when Tom Cruise said "and the hits keep on coming" until I checked it out here.

Othello game

Life is like an Othello game.
Even if you enjoy your prime time in the course of your life, your life may end up with a big misery by having one big fiasco at the end which could turn over the entire glory that you' ve earned in the course of your life.

And it's vice versa.

Your finall triumph in the end of a certain segment of your life may change the entire series of miserable days into something different.

That's why I shouldn't be cought off guard or get carried away even when my life seems to be going very well. And I shouldn't lose sight of hope even when my life seems to be running through a long derk tunnel.

Sleepy head

I've been kept so busy in the last couple of days tha I couldn't even post notes here.

It was about 3:00 am when I lef the office after having talked with my colleague in London. She said it's already past 8:00pm in UK.

I am so exhausted and sleepy now.

"Money doesn't sleep" said Mr. Gekko in the movie "Wall Street."

I thanked God as I was born to be a human, not Money.

dismay

Recently I cannot be so sure of the way to take care of junior staff and subordinates around me.

When it seems to me that they're getting out of the right track, I try to give some advice but my words don't seem to be coming home to their mind. As I don't like to say something decisicely, I always put it in such a (very) polite manner unlike other senior fellows. Still most of my words don't seem to be reaching their mind. At times I am even retorted by the.

I'm even starting to be afraid of telling something to them. It's easy to pretend ignorance to get away from unwelcomed confricts, though I think it's very irresponsible attitude for a man of my age.

Not knowing what to do and even being unable to remember what I should be, I often find myself in dismay these days. Sigh.

Aerobic excercise (有酸素運動)

Today is the last day of the four consecutive holidays in Singapore.

As it was raining a little this morning, we took a visit to an indoor amusement place where my kid can play with lots of playground equipment.

Chasing each other in a complicatedly built jungle gym is a good aerobic excercise even to me. I hope my waist size has shrinked a little. Hehe.

Medical expense

Today I went to see a dentist. I've been receiving treatments for weeks now. Today's bill was SGD700, such an eye popping figure, isn't it? The cumulative amount of the bill now exceeds SGD1,000. My health insurance covers 70% of the amount after I claim the amount.
Still, it's so expensive.

It costs a lot to remain healthy. Sigh.

Writing about medical expense reminds me that I used to learn how much of medical expense you can deduct in your tax filing in the U.S.

With a nostalgic feeling in mund, I accessed to the IRS website to remember the figures.

http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc502.html

Ah, AGI (Adjusted Gross Income)! Very nostalgic terminology, which reminds me of those days I struggled for USCPA exam.

Reading the page above, I remembered that the deductible amount is the amount that exceeds 7.5% of AGI. But, I also discovered this time that the amount is now 10% after Dec 31, 2012.

The rules keep changing. I wish to be like that, too, myself.

Having a break

Yesterday was a holiday in Singapore. The country became 48 years old on its birthday, which people here celebrate as National holiday.

As I was off on the holiday, I took my family to the butterfly park in Sentosa.

http://www.sentosa.com.sg/en/attractions/imbiah-lookout/butterfly-park-insect-kingdom/

The place was designed so that you come into the huge cage where the butterflies are tamed. You can feel the butterflies very close and even actually touch them. My 5 year-old daughter seemed very much enjoyng the place.

What drives one to study a foreign language

I used to learn Chinese seriously, trying to have a basic command of it, although it was such a long shot that I couldn't make it in the end.

Tonight, my team was having a dinner in a (very decent) Chinese reataurant and I was, as is often the case with a junior fellow in a Japanese company, managing the procedure of the party for senior participants. When most of the course menu had been served and then cleared, I was trying to find a chance for asking for the bill, not being sure, however, if there's any more dishes to come. I asked the question to a nearby Chinese waitress, but she didn't understand my English. I was a bit upset as other participants were waiting for my conversation with the waitress to finish to get me back to their conversation. Then a phrase suddenly occurred to me. Qian bu wan le ma? She opened her eyes a bit wider with apparent supprise at my Chinese, replying "yes, 全部完了)". Having felt a surging sense of relief, I said "Mai dan (Bill, please)"

At that moment, it seems I was reminded of what used to motivate me to study a foreign language when I started it: it was my strong curiocity toward a foreign language, the miracle tool which makes it possible to reach over to people who would otherwise be beyond my reach.

Stray sheep came back to its old den

It's been 7 years since I have ceased writing here. It was about 10 years ago when I initially started this blog to keep records of my everyday's study for USCPA exam. After struggling a couple of years, I've passed the exam, partly because of which I have turned my life into something that gives me a sense of accomplishment in my everyday work now, which rewords my years of efforts of the previous years.

After some years since then, now I have a feeling that things in myself have been stagnating with the same series of daily events and the resulting concerns on those things recurring and recurring as if I were in the labyrinth of dejavu.

It's true that I am now ten times busier in the office than I was 10 years ago. But it's also true that I have been neglecting to give a try to something new, quoting my everyday's busy status as an excuse for my negligence.

Will I keep leading my life this way or is there anything that could give me another kick for something even if it may require some effors from me? Wondering those things in my mind, I was somehow led back to this blog again today.

I will check my past posting tonight in my room to see if there's any hints here, talking with me in years ago.

Blackberry Bold

Blackberry bold

Studying English

I failed in the Chinese exam (level 3) the other day.
So I have to resume my study of Chinese.
But, recently, I’ve been heavily practicing English.

The other day I had a meeting with someone from UK to discuss a variety of business issues. And I was very much disappointed with my own English. I tripped on even such a common term as “CFC charge,” and naturally I wasn’t able to express my opinion effectively in the meeting.
Since then I’ve been working hard to improve my English listening comprehension as well as speaking fluency by frequently accessing such web sites as follows:

English Newshour
You can listen o the audio file of updated news and you can read the transcript of the news, too.

Roger's CPA Review Course
His exciting lecure on USCPA exam should be very interesting to those who're preparing for USCPA exam!
Besides, his speech is so fast that, after listening to his lecture, the news in English Newshour sound relatively slow. haha

And I realized again that it’s so fun to practice English.
Fortunately, now I often have a chance to use English in the office to communicate with people working in other countries. Taking advantage of it, I’ll keep working on my English.

But, yeah.
I have to resume to study Chinese, too!

Update of the blog on USCPA exam

As reported yesterday, I happened to check out FAS 153 to review the rules for Nonmonetary exchange.

First I tried to access to FAS 153 through a part of my blog, where I gathered my USCPA exam related information. But the link wasn't there.

So today I added the link to FAS 153 to the pulldown menu list as follows.

It's been a while since I modified the HTML of this blog last.
I have to do it at times so as not to forget how to do it. haha.

Non Monetary Exchange

in surprise / 驚いて

She looked at him in surprise.

14 years have passed since they married.

"You could get bills passed that would help the people."
---- from The Best Laid Plans, Sidney Sheldon.
