I feel very sad when I hear of the news that reports a suicide committed by youth. These days, many cases of suicide committed by school children are reported. But, why?
Of course, there’s no single answer for that; we cannot bundle up those cases together because situation should be different in each case.
The Government and school teachers say they’re going to pay more effort to eradicate bullying, about which I’m dubious…

Especially, here in Japan, people are expected to work in a coordinated manner in a group, where one’s identity or one’s value heavily depends upon the evaluation from the other members of the group. This heavy cultural baggage makes it so vital for school children to be respected by others in such a group as classmates.

They try slitting their wrists. They do that not because they want to die. They do that because they want to confirm that they are alive!

Thus, it is so vital for them to be acknowledged by families, friends, teachers, and other people around them.

So, when they fail to gain necessary amount of love, acknowledgement, evaluation, or respect, then, they start discounting their value, saying 「

But, in such a tragic case, s/he cannot gain even a little respect from others no matter how much discount for their value they might concede. Then, they keep discounting their value, wishing to be acknowledged by someone; the value-discounting act goes on until the value comes to zero, when they kill themselves…

The girl who killed herself the other day left a letter to her classmates. In the letter she said, “I’m glad now that such a big burden of the team (as me) has gone.”

It broke my heart…

If this is it, then the eradication of bullying doesn’t help them, I think; they would experience such an identity crisis when they graduate from school.

I want teachers to teach their students how to acknowledge their identity / existence without depending on the evaluation from other people.

I think they wouldn’t drive themselves to commit suicide.

It’s important to pay attention to the voices of people around us, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to accept those voices; they could be wrong in many cases! Nobody is perfect. So am I.

I’m saying things above because I myself have been having trouble in that kind of things in my life.

いじめや自殺の問題の背景なんて、とても複雑で、it’d be far beyond my guess.
